Does President Obama Have a Mandate?

Details

Shortly after last Tuesday’s election Speaker of the House John Boehner said President Obama has a mandate and the House will be more willing to work with the President on immigration and health care reform, taxes, the fiscal cliff, etc.  Additionally, the House no longer will seek to repeal Obamacare.

But let’s look at that “mandate”:

Obama is the first president in modern times to win re-election by a smaller margin than that by which he was elected in the first place. McKinley, Woodrow Wilson, FDR, Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan, and Clinton all increased their re-election vote share significantly. Obama’s dropped from a 7 point margin over McCain to a 1 point margin over Romney.  13% of Obama’s 2008 support vanished in 2012. Obama’s support fell from 53% in 2008 to 50% in 2012.  His vote total was down by a staggering 9 million.

So . . . does he have a mandate?  I believe, looking at those numbers, the answer is “No.”

Action Steps

Do you believe President Obama’s reelection is a mandate for him to advance the policies he’s espoused during his first term — socialized medicine, higher taxes, amnesty for illegal immigrants, funding Planned Parenthood, taking to court states that try to protect their own southern borders or pass voter ID laws, spending our tax dollars pushing abortion and homosexuality on the international community?

Today is the first day of the Lame Duck session which currently is scheduled to last 16 days.  Contact Speaker Boehner and your Congressman and let them know whether you believe President Obama has a mandate or should the House continue acting as a firewall to block outrageous policies.
