Issue

Thank Attorney General Jeff Sessions

Details

Attorney General Jeff Sessions issued a couple memos last week

  • rolling back an Obama era DOJ misinterpretation of the original intent of Title VII, which until 2014 had always been interpreted as simply referring to male and female and did not include the definition of sex discrimination to include ‘sexual orientation’ or ‘gender identity.’ This misunderstanding is gone with Attorney General Sessions’ memo
  • noting that the freedom of religion is a “fundamental right” expressly protected by federal law, Attorney General Sessions issued the second memo pursuant to President Trump’s Executive Order No. 13798 (May 4, 2017), which directed the Attorney General to “issue guidance interpreting religious liberty protections in Federal law” in order “to guide all agencies in complying with relevant Federal law.”  The 25 page memo touches on 20 areas (especially check out numbers 3, 4 and 19).  You can read them here

Action Steps

Thank Attorney General Sessions for

1.)  bringing commonsense back into the interpretation of Title VII.  The authors of that document never intended the word ‘sex’ to be redefined to include those who are confused about their sexuality!

2.)  for issuing the memo to rightly interpret the First Amendment to protect the exercise of religious freedom as the Founding Fathers intended.
