5 GOP Senators Believe It Is Constitutional to Impeach a Private Citizen

Details

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) forced a vote on the constitutionality of impeaching President Trump, now a private citizen.  Fifty-five US Senators, including five GOP Senators — Mitt Romney (UT), Susan Collins (ME), Lisa Murkowski (AK), Ben Sasse (NE), and Pat Toomey (PA) believe it is completely constitutional to impeach someone who is not in office and, according to the US Constitution, the punishment for impeachment is removal from office!  Not sure how that would work out.

As Senator Paul noted, the Democrats don’t have the two-thirds they need to impeach former President Donald Trump, so why the push for it?  Their goal is to make sure he never runs for public office again by impeaching him for “insurrection.”  They are using Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which was ratified after the Civil War in 1868.  Click here to read it.

Historically the Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court presides over the impeachment trial.  However, Chief Justice John Roberts is refusing to do so.  Senate Pro Tempore Patrick Leahy (D-VT) is expected to fulfill that task.  The impeachment trial is expected to begin the second week of February.

Action Steps

Senator Toomey has indicated he will not run for re-election in 2022 and apparently now he believes he can act as a free agent!  However, he is still answerable to Pennsylvania voters and needs to hear from us about his determination that it is constitutional to impeach a former president.  Click here to contact Senator Toomey.
