What is Your Local School Doing on February 28th?
Details:
“Welcoming Schools” sounds nice, but it is the Human Rights Campaign’s (HRC – the nation’s largest LGBTQ lobby group) program to push the LGBTQAI? agenda on schools. One of those efforts is through the February 28th “National Day of Reading: A Celebration of Trans Stores”. This annual reading day is now in its 10th year! Has your local school participated in the past? Will it this year??
Some of the books the HRC is “encouraging” to be read to or by elementary/middle school students are:
Born Ready: The True Story of a Boy Named Penelope (Pre K-3) — Penelope knows that he’s a boy. (And a ninja.) The problem is getting everyone else to realize it. Through frustrations and triumphs, Penelope’s experiences show children that it always makes you stronger when you are true to yourself and who you really are.
The Different Dragon (Pre K-1) — Shows how the wonderful curiosity and care of a little boy, with some help from his two moms, can lead to magical places with a dragon who is tired of being tough.
Goldie Vance: The Hotel Whodunit (grades 4-7) – Move over, Nancy Drew—there’s a new sleuth in town! Inspired by the beloved comic series, Goldie Vance is ready to sleuth her way through never-before-seen mysteries. Goldie, a biracial and LGBTQ 16-year-old lives and works at the Crossed Palms Resort Hotel with a whole slew of characters.
Hazel Bly and the Deep Blue Sea (grades 4-7) – After Hazel’s Mum dies, her other mother, Mama, and her little sister, Peach, need a fresh start. They finally move to Maine where Hazel becomes obsessed with a local mermaid myth and magic that helps her emerge from grief stronger than before.
Ivy Aberdeen’s Letter to the World (grades 5-7) – In the wake of a destructive tornado, one girl develops feelings for another in this stunning, tender novel about emerging identity.
There are also the original ones like Heather Has Two Mommies (PreK -K) and And Tango Makes Three (PreK-2).
High school books recommended include:
All Boys Aren’t Blue – intimately describes homosexual sex acts – which features a graphically-described sex scene between two young male cousins. Sexually graphic material, including descriptions of queer sex,”
Beyond Magenta – The story features a 6-year-old boy who recalls giving oral sex to friends in his neighborhood.
Flamer – sexually explicit and pornographic content
Even if your local school is not participating in the Human Rights Campaign, American Library Association – endorsed National Day of Reading, is your local elementary school having a Scholastic Book Fair? Here’s the link to some Scholastic books that may show up at your school’s book fair
